Case Study: Bailey & Sakura - Bespoke Dog Training in Norfolk

At Mel Newton Dog Training, every dog’s journey matters. In this case study, we spotlight Bailey and Sakura, two dogs with very different backgrounds but one shared goal: to grow into calm, confident companions through kind, progressive training.

Background

Bailey: A striking Husky x Dalmatian rescue, Bailey joined his new family with zero prior training and significant reactivity to other dogs, likely a result of poor early socialisation. He was also a strong lead puller, making walks challenging. Recognising his potential, his owner turned to Mel for expert support in helping Bailey feel safe and more connected.

Sakura: Sakura’s journey began early with Mel Newton Dog Training. Her owners brought her to puppy classes at just 10 weeks old, continuing into two rounds of follow-on training. As a young German Shepherd, Sakura’s family were especially mindful of avoiding breed-related behavioural pitfalls, having previously owned a reactive GSD. Their commitment to early socialisation and positive development has set Sakura on a path to success.

Methods Used

For Bailey:

  • Reward-Based Training: Food was ineffective due to his high arousal around distractions, so we used praise and affection to shape behaviours.

  • Threshold Training: Focused on desensitisation and counterconditioning, we gradually reduced his distance to triggers while maintaining calm engagement.

  • Low-Distraction Focus Work: Initial training occurred in quiet spaces to build his ability to concentrate and listen.

  • Behavioural Adjustment: Our aim was not just obedience, but emotional change, helping Bailey feel more at ease in the presence of other dogs.
For Sakura:

  • Foundation Manners: Early work covered recall, polite greetings, lead walking, and home behaviour.

  • Structured Socialisation: From day one, Sakura was introduced to other dogs, environments, and people with care to build confidence, not fear.

  • Family Inclusion: We worked closely with the family to guide interactions with their children, avoiding reinforcement of excitable or unwanted behaviours.

  • Ongoing Training: With two rounds of follow-on classes, Sakura’s training has progressed beyond basics, creating a respectful, well-rounded young GSD.

Challenges Along the Way

  • Bailey required time and patience. His reactivity wasn’t aggression; it was rooted in fear and overexcitement. Moving too fast could have easily undone his progress, so every step had to be carefully paced.

  • Sakura’s owners had to overcome public perception and breed bias. Despite her excellent behaviour, they were mindful of how GSDs are often misjudged, especially around children or other dogs.

A quote from Sakura’s owner

‘So, our previous dog was Kira. As a pup, she was attacked twice. A lab and a border collie. So went reactive outside of the home. Never reacted to the family or people. Would mock charge and bark, but it was a fight or flight. Never even defended herself when attacked.

My challenges are people and their reactions. Postmen or visitors can flinch or scream. Making situations worse, but Sakura is a very good so I do not have to worry. I notice things, but maybe more than normal because of previous experience. People worried when passing with kids. I have always been vocal and asked if they and the children would like to say hello and pet. Previously, too, as long as no other dogs were around, in case of a reaction. People will walk out of the way or path to avoid them being near when passing. I have had experiences of people screaming like being hurt because of a bark from a GSD. Which, with a reactive dog, makes it all so much worse. But also, so many people who love the breed will want to come say hello. Encourage a cuddle or jump, which makes training hard. Also, a dog doesn't always want a stranger's face in theirs. Maybe learning I need to say no. But I have always wanted to help provide positive GSD experiences to others.’

Results So Far

  • Bailey is showing brilliant signs of progress. While still early in his journey, he’s now able to focus more in the presence of distant dogs, walk more calmly on the lead, and look to his owner for guidance; a huge emotional shift from where he started.

  • Sakura has blossomed into a balanced, sociable young dog with great manners both in and outside the home. Her early training has built strong habits, and she continues to impress with her focus, friendliness, and responsiveness.
