Case Study: Darcey - Tailored Dog Reactivity Training in Norfolk

At Mel Newton Dog Training, we know that every dog’s journey is different. In this case study, we shine a light on Darcey, a beautiful Coonhound learning to feel calm and confident in the presence of unfamiliar dogs. Through Mel’s bespoke dog reactivity training in Norfolk, we are seeing clear improvements to Darcey’s temperament day by day - find out how below.

Background

Darcey lives in a multi-dog household with four other dogs and coexists peacefully with them. However, her owners began to notice reactivity during walks, particularly after a family holiday, when Darcey would bark, lunge, and become distressed upon seeing unfamiliar dogs. Recognising the emotional toll it was taking on both Darcey and themselves, her owners reached out for support.

The goal wasn’t just better behaviour, it was to help Darcey feel more at ease when out in the world.

Methods Used

Mel’s approach to Darcey’s reactivity began with a comprehensive assessment, starting with a review of her health to rule out any underlying pain or medical conditions. Once cleared, we focused on:

  • Obedience Without Distractions: Before tackling triggers, we revisited the foundations - loose lead walking, focus exercises, and communication cues, reinforcing Darcey’s understanding in calm, low-pressure environments.

  • Clicker Training Introduction: We introduced clicker training as a way to reshape Darcey’s emotional response. First, the clicker was ‘charged’, pairing the sound with a reward so that Darcey associated it with something positive.

  • Threshold Work With Distance Triggers: Using carefully measured distances, we then began introducing controlled triggers (other dogs) while maintaining Darcey’s focus and calm state. This helped us identify her reactivity threshold and created space for successful repetitions.

  • Stooge Dog Work: To make sessions feel more natural and controlled, we introduced Wren, one of Mel’s reliable stooge dogs. This allowed Darcey to practise calm behaviours around other dogs without escalating into a reactive state.

Challenges Along the Way

Darcey’s reactivity isn’t rooted in aggression - it’s an emotional response likely tied to insecurity and overstimulation. Because of her size, strength, and breed instincts, helping her stay calm under pressure is both essential and challenging.

Patience and pacing have been key: moving too quickly could undo her progress, so every session is tailored to meet her exactly where she is.

Results So Far

Darcey has already made clear progress. During a recent walk with Wren, she managed the entire session without a single reactive outburst - an encouraging milestone that reflects her growing ability to cope with previously overwhelming situations.

We’re still early in her behaviour modification plan, but the signs are promising. With continued structured training and carefully chosen stooge sessions, Darcey is well on her way to more peaceful, positive walks.

Why It Works

This case demonstrates how a combination of positive reinforcement, clear communication, and professional planning can support even the most emotionally complex dogs. By focusing not just on obedience but on emotional change, we’re building confidence, not compliance.
