Case Study: Flora — Miniature Poodle Training in Swaffham for a Tiny Pup with Big Character
When Flora’s owner got in touch, they were looking for guidance with socialisation, house training, and polite manners — all the essentials for giving Flora the very best start in life. At just 1.1kg, this miniature toy poodle may be small in size, but she arrived bursting with personality and energy. This case study highlights how flexible, positive reinforcement-based puppy training — combined with thoughtful family integration — can support even the tiniest pups to grow into confident, well-rounded companions.

Background
Flora joined a household with another dog — Daphne, a spirited diva who wasn’t quite convinced her new little sister was a good idea. The early focus was on ensuring a smooth introduction between the two dogs, while laying foundations for key behaviours like recall and impulse control.
Given Flora’s age and size, we opted for in-home puppy training. This setup allowed us to keep things calm, safe and structured, especially important while she was still unvaccinated and adjusting to her new environment.
Methods Used
Our sessions with Flora have used shaping and capturing techniques — ideal for young pups who benefit from mentally stimulating tasks and plenty of positive feedback.
- Shaping Recall: Flora is already responding beautifully to recall cues in controlled settings. Her confidence is growing, and she's learning that coming when called is always a good thing. We make sure each recall ends positively — no snatching away favourite toys or leaves!
- Capturing Heel Position: We’ve begun introducing heel work by rewarding her when she naturally moves into the correct position. This lays the groundwork for future lead training in a way that’s low-pressure and highly rewarding.
- Attention without Pressure: During a garden session, Flora had picked up a leaf. Instead of diving in and creating a confrontation, we simply encouraged her to come to us. She dropped the leaf voluntarily — a perfect example of reinforcing recall without risking negative associations.
- House Training Guidance: We discussed toileting routines and how to reduce accidents in a way that suits Flora’s stage of development and her owner's daily schedule.
- Daphne & Flora Dynamics: Social integration sessions focused on calm, managed interactions. Daphne has begun to soften towards Flora, and their relationship is becoming more balanced and accepting.
Challenges Along the Way
Integrating a tiny pup into a household with an older, more dominant dog is always a delicate process. We had to ensure both dogs felt secure and respected, without creating rivalry or resentment.
Flora’s small stature also meant adapting exercises for safety and engagement — long training walks or high-impact play weren’t on the menu just yet. Mel’s puppy socialisation in Swaffham (and the nearby areas) allows for monitored and manageable socialising of the new pup with the older dog.
Results So Far
Flora is thriving. Her recall is progressing beautifully, she’s confident in her home, and we’re seeing early signs of a much-improved bond between her and Daphne.
She’s also building a solid understanding of routines, learning new behaviours quickly, and showing the kind of focus that’s rare in such a young dog — a testament to her owner’s consistency and Flora’s eager personality.
Why It Works
This case study is a great reminder that successful puppy training isn’t just about obedience — it’s about setting up a puppy to thrive emotionally, mentally and socially within their family.
With the right blend of patience, play and progression-focused training, even the tiniest of dogs can learn to be calm, clever companions.
