Case Study: Loki - Springer Spaniel Training in Swaffham to Calm Overstimulation on Walks

Loki, a gregarious 3-year-old Springer Spaniel, is the embodiment of confidence and charm. Like many Springers, he believes everyone’s a potential friend, and every walk is a party. But his zest for life had started to result in frustration on the lead, turning routine outings into overwhelming experiences for both dog and owner.

This case study explores how a calm, back-to-basics approach helped Loki settle into a more manageable mindset and enjoy walks without chaos.

Background

Loki’s owner reached out to Mel due to escalating overstimulation on walks. From the moment his lead was picked up, Loki would become excitable, pulling and becoming increasingly frustrated once outside.

We began by evaluating Loki’s daily routines. His physical needs were being met, but his mental and emotional balance needed more structure. From the outset, we introduced calm greeting manners at home, showing Loki that stillness and patience would lead to all good things, not excitable lunging or jumping.

Methods Used

Desensitisation to the Lead

Loki’s overstimulation began at the earliest stage; just spotting the lead would spark excitement. So we slowed everything down. The lead was only clipped on when Loki remained calm. If he became over-aroused, the process paused.T

his principle of calm before progress extended to the door and threshold - no forward motion unless Loki remained composed.

Rebuilding from the Basics

Even though Loki was three, we reset expectations to puppy basics. We reintroduced:

  • A clear reward zone (Loki is highly food- and praise-motivated).
  • Immediate feedback - movement stopped as soon as the lead tightened.
  • Calm, structured steps in low-distraction areas like the garden and driveway.
Over time, we transitioned to short walks around Loki’s quiet close, then progressed incrementally to busier streets and eventually the local park.

Real-World Progressions

To simulate real-world triggers, Mel incorporated one of her own dogs as a calm distraction in a follow-up session. Loki handled the added stimulation beautifully, maintaining the learned behaviours even with another dog present.

His owners have since reported repeated success in other locations and around unfamiliar dogs.

Challenges Along the Way

While Loki is bright and eager, generalising behaviours in new environments was initially tough. Progress wasn’t linear, but consistency was key.

A critical part of Loki’s progress came from shifting his owners’ mindset. Returning to basics can feel demoralising when you have an adult dog, but respecting the dog’s pace over human timelines proved vital.

Results So Far

Today, Loki walks calmly out the door and responds predictably to the lead. His frustration has significantly reduced, and his walks are now a shared activity instead of a source of tension.

The owners’ consistency and openness to slow, measured training laid the foundation for sustainable behaviour change.

Why It Works

Loki’s case is a reminder that overstimulation isn’t about disobedience; it’s often about emotional overwhelm. By:

  • Returning to basics
  • Practising in low-distraction environments
  • Offering calm feedback loops
  • Maintaining consistent expectations
…we created a structure that helped Loki understand what was expected - and what he could expect in return.

More importantly, we empowered his owners to feel confident and in control again.
