Case Study: Snoop & Peabody — Tailored Beagle Training for Hounds in Swaffham

When Snoop and Peabody’s owner first got in touch with me, they were looking for a training plan that would set their two young Beagles up for success. As anyone who has owned a Beagle knows, these bright, scent-driven hounds come with plenty of character — and just as many challenges!

This case study shows how, with patience, consistency and a flexible approach, beagle training and training for hounds can bring out the very best in these wonderful dogs.

Background

Snoop and Peabody arrived as two lively puppies with very different personalities. Their owner already had great experience with Beagles but wanted structured, positive foundation work to help shape their behaviours early on, especially around lead manners and impulse control.

We decided on an in-home training package with weekly sessions. This format was ideal for working around the summer heat, as exercises could be done indoors or in shaded areas, providing mental stimulation when outdoor running wasn’t sensible.

Methods Used

Our focus has been on shaping and capturing behaviours — a favourite method of mine for training hounds who thrive when they get to problem-solve.

  • Shaping the Heel Position: Both pups have learned to find and hold the heel position, which lays the groundwork for loose lead walking later on. Shaping exercises like these are ideal for training hounds, as they prevent boredom and reduce frustration by keeping clever noses and minds busy.
  • Board Work & Rewards: Using a board and a marker word, we capture the right movement and reward quickly. This helps build confidence and keeps them engaged.
  • Tailored Pace: Snoop, being more reserved, needs faster rewards to keep frustration low and confidence high. Peabody, the bolder of the two, figured out the game quickly and needed extra challenges to stay focused.
  • Owner Coaching: We’ve also covered the importance of consistent voice tone, clear cues and calm energy at home — especially helpful when juggling two energetic Beagles!

Challenges Along the Way

Like many scent hounds, these boys have strong instincts to follow their noses. Their differences in temperament meant we had to adapt each step to suit them as individuals — a reminder that beagle training is never one-size-fits-all.

Snoop’s confidence needed careful building to avoid any training frustration. Peabody’s enthusiasm meant we had to balance speed and accuracy to keep him steady and listening.

Results So Far

As the weeks have gone on, it’s been brilliant to see their personalities flourish. Both puppies now have a solid grasp of their foundation exercises, and their owner has clear, practical steps to follow in between sessions.
These early sessions will set them up beautifully for lead work outdoors, better impulse control, and more enjoyable walks for everyone.

Why It Works

This case study is a lovely example of why training for hounds needs to be flexible, kind and progression-focused. With shaping exercises and positive reinforcement, we give dogs like Snoop and Peabody the mental challenge they need — and help owners feel confident and consistent.
