Case Study: Boda & Peggy — Bespoke In-Home Dog Training in Downham Market

At Mel Newton Dog Training, we’re passionate about helping each dog flourish in their own way. In this case study, we explore the stories of two very different but equally wonderful dogs: Boda, a sensitive Labrador with working dog potential, and Peggy, a mild-mannered companion dog learning to channel her energy purposefully.

Background

Boda: Boda’s owner had previously raised a Labrador and felt that with stronger training support early on, the outcome could have been even better. Determined to give Boda the very best start, she enrolled in our 6-week in-home training programme, aiming to develop Boda into a well-rounded, field-ready working dog.

Boda is incredibly sensitive and benefits from a kind, calm, and emotionally attuned approach. Her owner chose to work with me after reading reviews that praised our patient, adaptable and motivating training style - something she felt aligned with Boda’s needs.

Peggy: Peggy’s training goals were different. Her owners were simply looking to create a well-mannered family companion, building a relaxed and harmonious human-dog relationship. However, they also recognised her breed’s working potential and expressed interest in developing her further through gundog training later on.

While Peggy has a sweet and laid-back personality, she initially needed a little extra encouragement to get into the training groove. Once we identified the right reward system - food-based motivation - she began progressing beautifully.

Methods Used

For Boda:

  • Lead & Off-Lead Heelwork: We introduced structured sessions to reinforce steadiness and responsiveness, essential qualities for a future field dog.

  • Confidence Building: Using reassurance, choice-based exercises and reward markers to strengthen her confidence.

  • Owner Education: Discussing early errors to avoid, and developing a thoughtful, progression-based plan for field readiness.

  • Adaptable Techniques: Sessions were carefully adjusted to Boda’s mood and responses, always keeping stress levels low.
For Peggy:

  • Reward Calibration: We trialled various motivators before confirming high-value treats were most effective for her.

  • Placeboard Training: A great tool for developing impulse control, calmness, and focus in a relaxed home setting.

  • Behaviour Foundations: We covered polite greetings, recall, focus exercises, and home manners - all key for a reliable pet.

  • Gundog Prep: Without rushing, we started gently introducing tasks like directional work and stillness - great foundations for future field work.

Challenges Along the Way

Both dogs needed different kinds of support:

  • Boda required emotionally intelligent training - any rushed or overly directive method could have impacted her trust and confidence.

  • Peggy needed to build momentum - her easy-going nature meant she didn’t always feel naturally driven to work, but once her ideal reward was found, her engagement soared.

Results So Far

Both dogs are making excellent progress:

  • Boda is already excelling at lead and off-lead heelwork - key for working dogs - and her steadiness and bond with her owner are deepening.

  • Peggy has blossomed into a focused, polite dog with a growing toolkit of obedience skills and a solid baseline for future gundog-style work.
The bespoke nature of their training plans meant we could adapt each session to the dog in front of us, leading to more engagement, better retention, and happier owners.

Why It Works
